They tell you it is easy. Just start a blog and money will come. You can be the controller of your life and live anywhere.
I learned early via the blogger groups that this isn’t a myth as I had a 12 year veteran blogger critique my first site. I asked about his blogging projects and he was living the life I wanted.
If you have every tried to start a blog though you probably have some idea how hard it is to actually build a blog. You have to be consistent, you have to write all the time and in a way that appeals to people, and you have to keep it interesting.
If you are still sitting there wondering how you can turn a site into something that earns, then I can suggest the 5 ways to start the money making side of blogging.
You don’t need a ton of readers, you just need a good strategy and time to let your site mature.
1. Affiliate Marketing
You will see on many blogs where they include the disclaimer where they inform you that their blog has some sort of product referral links that will take you to a product where if you buy it gives the blogger a small earnings kickback.
The blog owner gets a small percentage back on the sale and it is at no extra cost to you. If you have your own blog this is a good strategy to employ as well.
Keys here with affiliate marketing is to promote products that you know are high beneficial to the readers and in good faith. A good rule to follow is to promote products that even if you don’t get paid for it you would recommend.
Trust on your blog is important.
When you find products or services you love or think your target audience would love, you want to dig to see if there is an affiliate program.
Affiliate programs are free to join and many people in the past like to start with places like Amazon or Etsy.
Both commerce sites give you access to custom product links which you promote on your website. When the links are used and a person buys something, you get some percentage of money.
2. Sell Physical Products
The other direct way of making money from your site is selling your own products, either digital or physical, directly.
There are a lot of website tools that allow for easier product sales directly from your own site.
Setting this up is a bit more difficult than affiliate if dealing in physical goods as you have to figure out manufacturing issues, storing, and shipping.
A lot of bloggers prefer fulfillment companies because they will handle most of the process and your side is to process the orders on the blog.
One popular company is Amazon FBA, they allow you to ship your products to a warehouse and they handle the storing and shipping.
3. Consulting Services
Consulting services are an effective way to make money quickly on a new blog. If you have in-depth knowledge of some topic or any sort of expertise then people will come to you for that expertise.
If you have professional experience, any significant hobby, or some desirable knowledge then people may want to pay for one-on-one time.
To get this model to work you need loyal customers willing to pay for what you know. You have to be good at marketing, build your social presence, and demonstrate your offering.
4. Online Courses
Now is a good time to develop your own courses. There are a couple third-party platforms like Teachable and it is even possible to host on your own site.
Online courses are also how you can use your expertise and knowledge and turn it into income. Online courses are a good way to get that passive scalable income.
You do some initial work upfront and then as long as people use the learning resource you have passive cashflow.
To start it is important to get an idea of what readers are interested in. An easy way is to go to groups or forums about your topic and ask questions to research what people are curious about. What are they trying to learn? You can develop a course around your market research.
5. Create a Membership Site
If you find yourself with a good fanbase, you might want to try to offer a membership option. Memberships are where readers pay for a set amount of time per month. This can be a strong revenue source with more punch that a single time product.
Only drawback is that readers will expect better than average in return. If you have a good collection of high level content in the membership area, then they will probably be very pleased.
You can also offer discounts on occasion to products and courses or discount new content. You will want a buzzing site before you go this route though.
If you are just starting out, it is best to keep your head down and keep doing the work. Blogs are a great way to earn and the more you put in to your projects the more they give you.
I’ve known bloggers will teeny micro-niche sites that earn pretty well even with a small following.
When monetizing a blog you have to approach it the same way you do content creation- you have to supply value and give a solid benefit to readers.
All of these monetization methods have their own pros and cons or their own challenges to get them converting as intended. A lot of that is experience you will pick up as you go. If you keep working at it then you will unlock how to monetize your content going forward from 2022.
